It's not enough to be cheap. These days, for me to want to bring something into my house it's also got to be environmental, unique or otherwise interesting. I wanted a place to put booze bottles out of reach of the little ones and also more organized than just spread across a shelf. As a bonus I'd like to have a small serving area where I could pour a drink so I don't have to run up and down stairs all the time. This helps out big time during parties. I can put an ice bucket up there and let people go to town.
I got the gas pipe bar idea from some really annoying home improvement show. Can't remember which. This is similar, but what I did here was minimize the number of parts to reduce the price as much as possible.
I used a stain called "weathered oak" and covered that with two coats of polyurethane.
The last step was to paint it black.
